Movie Review Pearl Harbor - 1318 Words

The Academy Award-winning movie Pearl Harbor (2001), the portrayal of the tragedy and heroics of the attack on the Naval and Army forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, captured the hearts of Americans all over the country. But how accurate was this portrayal? Does this really depict the true happenings of that infamous day, or is this another Hollywood attempt to enstill a deeper message into the minds of movie-goers? Although it was based on the true happenings of that day in 1941, many of the movie’s key aspects were historically inaccurate, and we will focus on some of those key aspects. Going in order of the movie, it starts of with a key turning point. Two pilots, Rafe McCawley (played by Ben Affleck) and Danny Walker (played by Josh Hartnett) are seen practicing some risky flight maneuvers which land them in the office of their commanding office, then Major Jimmy Doolittle (played by Alec Baldwin). For what should be a serious disciplinary meeting turns into what bec omes the key character-building component of of Rafe McCawley. He is informed that he has been accepted into one of the British Royal Air Force’s American fighter pilot squadrons, know as Eagle Squadrons. While these did exist in the war in Europe, McCawley’s call to service is false, as the only American members of these squadrons were volunteers, and volunteers that were not active-duty members.
