Movie Review Pearl Harbor - 1318 Words

The Academy Award-winning movie Pearl Harbor (2001), the portrayal of the tragedy and heroics of the attack on the Naval and Army forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, captured the hearts of Americans all over the country. But how accurate was this portrayal? Does this really depict the true happenings of that infamous day, or is this another Hollywood attempt to enstill a deeper message into the minds of movie-goers? Although it was based on the true happenings of that day in 1941, many of the movie’s key aspects were historically inaccurate, and we will focus on some of those key aspects. Going in order of the movie, it starts of with a key turning point. Two pilots, Rafe McCawley (played by Ben Affleck) and Danny Walker (played by Josh Hartnett) are seen practicing some risky flight maneuvers which land them in the office of their commanding office, then Major Jimmy Doolittle (played by Alec Baldwin). For what should be a serious disciplinary meeting turns into what bec omes the key character-building component of of Rafe McCawley. He is informed that he has been accepted into one of the British Royal Air Force’s American fighter pilot squadrons, know as Eagle Squadrons. While these did exist in the war in Europe, McCawley’s call to service is false, as the only American members of these squadrons were volunteers, and volunteers that were not active-duty members. We have read in the news recently that there are plenty of public defenders who are facing budget cuts and are in a financial crisis. A present day example of this can be seen by how a chief public defender in New Orleans has had to resort to turning clients away due to a lack of resources. However, it is not only due to money that they have had to turn clients away, these client who may have no other means of representation; they also believe that they can no longer perform up to the standards of the Constitution and their own code of ethics. As such, it could be argued that the public defenders can’t provide ‘effective counsel’ when there are too many cases, which would violate the defendant’s right. They would seem to be caught in a catch 22, where they are doomed if they take on all the cases or they are sued if they don’t. The public defender’s office in New Orleans is understaffed, currently employing 42 overworked lawyers, in relation t o the 72 attorneys and 20 investigators it employed in 2008. Vigan is an island, which used to be detached from the mainland by three rivers the great Abra River, the Mestizo River and the Govantes River. It is unique among the Philippine towns because it is the country’s most extensive and only surviving historic city that dates back to the 15th century Spanish colonial period. Vigan was an important coastal trading post in precolonial times. Long before the Spanish galleons, Chinese junks sailing from the South China Sea came to Isla de Bigan through the Mestizo River that surrounded the island. On board were sea-faring merchants that came to barter exotic goods from Asian kingdoms in exchange for gold, beeswax and other mountain products brought down by natives from the Cordilleras. Immigrants, mostly Chinese, settled in Vigan, intermarried with the natives and started the multi-cultural bloodline of the Biguenos. In the book, The Philippine Island, Vol. III, p. 76, Blair and Robertson, two letters of Governor General Guido de Lavezares to King Philip II of Spain mentions: â€Å"It seemed best to send Captain Juan de Salcedo with 70 or 80 soldiers to people the coast of Los Ilocano on the shores of the river called Bigan. Governor General Gomez Perez Darmarinas, in his Account of Encomienda dated in Manila on May 31, 1591 states: â€Å"The town of Vigan called Villa Fernandina has five or six Spanish citizens with one priest, a Justice, one Alcalde Mayor (Governor) and a Deputy. The King collects 800 tributes (equivalent to 3,200 subjects). During this period, the old Vigan was composed of 19 barrios. In 1645-1660, Vigan was already divided into 21 Cavezas de Barangay as mentioned in the â€Å"Libro de Casamiento†, the oldest records of the parish house of Vigan found in its Archives. Separated from the naturales, the Chinese have their own place of settlement called pariancillo, â€Å"Los Sangleyes del parian† and the Spaniards were residents in a villa called â€Å"Los Espanoles de la Villa†. How Vigan got its name is told from an anecdote carried by the tongue of generations, which tells of a Spaniard walking along the banks of the Mestizo River. There, he met a native of the place and stopped to inquire: â€Å"Como se Ilama usted de esta lugar? Not understanding a word of Spanish, the native scratched his head and upon seeing that the Spaniard was pointing to a plant, exclaimed in Ilocano: â€Å"Bigaa Apo†. Bigaa being Alcasia Macroniza, a giant Taro plant belonging to the Gabi family which used to thrive at the bank of the Mestizo River. From the name of the plant – Bigaa, whence Vigan derived its name. The area of Vigan was originally a settlement of traders coming from the  Fujian  Province,  China.

Answers: 1.Careers in ICT Computing has come such a long way, so much so that today, its almost impossible to keep up with technological advancements according to Hitt and Tambe (2016, p. 835). Those individuals with a passion for molecular biology are delving into the new-found fertile ground which is bioinformatics. This paper focuses on the advancement of technology on informatics. It also presents a personal reflection on experience that enabled me to develop skills towards a professional career. As an interdisciplinary field of science that innovate strategic methods and software tools for deeper understanding of biological data, mathematics, statistics, Bioinformatics combines, computer science, and engineering in the analysis and interpretation of biological data. It provides a frontier for researchers to look for hidden information in the DNA without the need of ever putting on a lab coat (Mascola Shapiro, 2017, p. 110). Now, this is where we need to go. That we can study DNA replication using only a simple algorithm that investigates the genome, or better yet apply the same randomized algorithms to understand the complex DNA language and its essentiality in the biological clock in processes such as aging is totally revolutionary (Shenoy 2016, p. 65). The question of which DNA patterns are essential in the molecular clocks processes e.g. maintaining the circadian rhythm can now be answered. Bioinformatics affords us the software tools in finding recurring biological moti fs within genes that assists the Mycobacterium tuberculosis (the pathogen that causes TB) dominating the host's system for a long time before it causes an active infection. 2.Reflection on life experiences Experience is the best teacher that gives the best lesson they say and I have had my share of lessons in the school of life too. While on clinical placement in the surgical ward, I had been charged with nursing a 60-year-old Mr. Keen who was recovering from abdominal surgery. I noticed that the doctor, who had been examining another patient, came straight to Mr. Keen and started examining his wound. I was shocked because I expected that he could sanitize his hands with alcohol pads first or wear gloves. I was concerned that this could lead to cross-contamination, but I was not certain I would speak up because I thought he was more experienced. Over the next few days the wound had become septic, and I could not help but blame myself for my inaction. I realized that I had to be assertive when dealing with colleagues and sometimes seniors and this is a character that would be vital in my professional practice. Today I endeavor to speak my mind assertively on matters clients welfare even when it means challenging my colleagues practice. Another instance while still on clinical placement, I was working on patient records that had been delegated to me by my supervisor. There was so much on my desk that it was apparent I would not submit them on time, but I was committed to quality so I gave it my all even beyond the deadline and thought that would be my excuse. Convinced that I had done my best I took to my supervisors office. He was satisfied with the quality of work but was mad as hell that I was late. His advice was that if I were to be in such a position in the future, I would need to explain myself before the due date rather than wait to give excuses later. Honesty is a virtue after all. This way you earn the trust of your seniors. Am never giving excuses after am late, I will explain the reasons beforehand.
